Book Review: Godan

Godan is a famous hindi book written by Munshi Premchand in 1936. Though the original book is much thicker, I have read a short version of it, which itself was very enticing.

The book revolves around a farmer Hori and his life, which includes his family and profession. Hori depicts the condition of farmers in dependent India under Britishers and how much they had to struggle to earn enough to get food for the day. It shows the exploitation of peasants by various hands from the government to the village sarpanch (head).

The story also shows a sharp contrast between the lives of Indian villages and cities. A simple peasant who does so much of hard-work just to feed his family and save his family prestige has to sacrifice all that he desires of the material world.

It is a heart-touching story and I bet you can't leave the book before completing it. It is a well-read Indian literature and Munshi Premchand has been a well-known legend in this.

For those who can't read Hindi, there are various translations of the book in English and probably in other languages too. A must-read for everyone.

Making a business plan is the most essential part of any business, whether big or small. Especially for entrepreneurs, a good business plan not only helps in charting out the goals and operations of the business in black-and-white but also helps in getting venture capitalists and investors.

A good book on this subject is 'All-in-one Business Planner' by Christopher R. Malburg. Mr. Mulbarg is  an MBA as-well-as a CPA. This book by him is a perfect guide to prepare a business plan from scratch to finish.

The book covers all the departments of an organization, like Sales and Marketing, Operations, Strategy and Finance to name a few, in great depth. The book guides on how to create plans for any area of the business with details like:

a) Setting organization goals
b) Sales Monitoring
c) Controlling Purchases
d) Expenses forecasting, and much more

This book is a must read for every business manager and definitely not-a-miss for an entrepreneur.

An Autobiography - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru

Note: This is not a sponsored review.

I was not a big Fan of Autobiographies. Found them very Dull & Boring. I felt that people who thought great of themselves wrote Autobiographies. They must be feeling they are Superior to others when they write One. But had to change my Mind when I read this 643-pages Autobiography of our First Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

He wrote this Book in Prison, in the Almora District Jail, as a Political Prisoner. I am sure he was not feeling Superior at the Time. It was written in between 1934 and 1935, when Writing was the only Past Time for him inside the Four Walls of the Jail Barrack.

It is his Personal Story where he has started with his Family, his Father Motilal Nehru’s Birth, his Birth, the growing up in Allahabad, his Family’s association with Politics & Nation’s Struggle for Freedom and his long-lasting Struggle in Crafting India’s Fight for Independence from Britishers.

He has also described beautifully how India awakened to a larger cause and how it wanted to get rid of old Chains of Patience and putting up with the Torture under the Hands of its Rulers.

Another important aspect of this Book is that it is just not devoted solely to Chacha Nehru. He has given due respect to all those who featured in his Journey with him, from Mahatma Gandhi to a small Prisoner in a Jail he met. Hence, it is not just an Autobiography but also a Story of India’s Independence till 1935. We get a glimpse of how much our Ancestors suffered so that we can live in a Free India.

Pandit Nehru was not just a great Leader but a great Writer too. He has written some other Books too and I am surely not going to miss them.
